A coyote is a medium-sized canine which is a member of the dog family, just like wolves, jackals, and foxes.
How much do coyotes weigh?
Male coyotes have an average weight of 18 to 44 pounds (8 to 20 kg).
Females weigh around 15 to 40 pounds (7 to 18 kg).
The scientific name for the coyote is Canis Iatrans and they are native to North America with a resemblance to a German Shepherd.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature lists coyotes as an animal they are least concerned about, this is because they are well distributed throughout America and highly adaptable.
You may see a coyote in brown, grey or black depending on its habitat which could be North America, Central America, Mexico or Canada.
Forests, deserts, mountains and sometimes tropical regions all play home to the coyote.
As rural regions become more urbanized, it is becoming more common to spot coyotes in big cities where they have been able to adapt to.
Coyotes are opportunistic predators and although they are solitary animals they hunt in packs.
They can even drive their prey towards a hidden member of the pack and have many other hunting strategies.
Coyotes have an extremely highly developed sense of smell, along with excellent sight and hearing.
To avoid other predator’s which could be bears, wolves or cougars, coyotes can tippy toe along the ground.
