The bell pepper, which is a relative of the chili pepper, is also known as a capsicum or a sweet pepper.

A bell pepper can come in many different colors depending on the cultivar including red, white, green, purple, orange and yellow. They are native to South and Central America.

Capsaicin, which produces the hot spice commonly found in other varieties of hot peppers, is less present in bell peppers. This is part of the reason why it is known as a sweet pepper.
