Deer are graceful herbivores that are found on every continent in the world, except for Antarctica and Australia.

A large number of deer species weigh between 100 and 400 pounds.

The Pudú is the smallest deer species, weighing around 26 pounds.

On the other end of the scales is the Moose, which can weigh as much as 1,800 pounds.

How Much Does a Mule Deer Weigh?

Mule deer are found in Western North America and parts of South America. Males, or stags, weigh between 120 pounds and 330 pounds.

Females, or does, are lighter, weighing between 95 pounds and 200 pounds.

Baby deer, also known as fawns, typically weigh between 4 to 8 pounds when they are born.

Two families of deer exist. The first family is called Cervinae or Old-World deer, which include species such as chital, barasingha, muntjac, elk, white-tailed deer, fallow deer, red deer, and sika deer.

The other deer family is Capreolinae or New-World Deer, and it includes mule deer, reindeer, moose, pudu, and roe deer.

How Fast Can a Deer Run?

With four powerful, long legs, most deer need to be able to run fast individually or in herds, to evade predators.

Many types of deer can reach speeds of over 40 mph. Elk are one of the fastest deer species. When they are in full flight, they have been clocked at 45 mph!

How High Can a Deer Jump?

Deer are athletic, agile animals that have a real spring in their step.

Many deer species are capable of jumping 6 or 7 feet in the air, with some species, such as the white tail deer, having the ability to jump as high as 15 feet!

Deer and other types of animals, such as antelope, springbok, and gazelles, may look the same. However, they are different types of animals, with deer having antlers, while the other animals have horns.

Antelope, springbok, and gazelles horns are permanently attached to their heads, but deer shed their antlers every year and grow a new set!
