The average weight of a pineapple is 35.3 ounces (1,002 grams). That’s almost 2 pounds.
A slice of pineapple weighs 6.2 ounces (175 grams).
One cup of pineapple chunks weighs approximately 5.8 ounces (165 grams).
Where Did Pineapples Originate From?
The origin of the pineapple is said to be between Paraguay and Brazil.
The Paraguayans and Brazilians spread the fruit all across South America. After that it found its way to Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Today, Hawaii produces around 1/3 of all pineapples in the world.
Christopher Columbus discovered pineapples on Guadeloupe Island in 1493. He called the fruit “the pine of the Indians” and took the fruit back to Europe.
Now the largest growers of pineapples are in South East Asia. You can find plenty of pineapples growing in Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.
How Do Pineapples Grow?
Most people think pineapples grow on trees, but that isn’t the case. The pineapple grows as an individual plant out of the ground.
You can grow pineapple plants by slicing off the pineapple top and planting it in the soil.
A pineapple plant can grow to around 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) tall and even bigger in some cases.
