A full-grown Saint Bernard generally weighs between 120 to 260 pounds (54 to 117 kg).
Males are larger, weighing 140 to 180 pounds (63 to 81 kg), while females weigh between 120 and 140 pounds (54 to 63 kg).
The heaviest St. Bernard on record weighed in at 315 pounds (143 kg).

There’s no doubt that Saint Bernards grow up to be very large dogs. But they start life very small and only weigh 1 to 1.5 pounds when they are born.

Powerfully built and tall, the Saint Bernard originated in the Alps. These dogs have an exceptional tolerance for cold weather conditions.
St. Bernards got their name from an Augustine monk. Saint Bernard de Menthon set up a monastery and hospice in the 11th century AD.
The original Saint Bernard helped people who were traveling through the Alps. In later years, they were deployed to a place called St. Bernard’s Pass to carry out the same type of rescue work.
It’s believed these dogs saved as many as 2,000 people’s lives.
Although big and strong, the Saint Bernard has a fairly-short lifespan.
Most of these dogs have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years.

As well as being tall and heavy canines, Saint Bernards also have a long body.
A report in the New York Times in 1895 featured a story about a Saint Bernard called Major F.
According to this newspaper article, Major F was 8 feet 6 inches long. This would make him the longest dog on record!
