Weight Of Transmission

Transmission

The transmission in a car is responsible for transferring the of power from the engine to the wheels. That is, moving the vehicle.

They are big and can be quite heavy.

So, how much does a transmission weigh?

A front wheel drive transmission can vary in weight from 90 to 300 pounds (40 to 136 kg).

A rear wheel drive four and five-speed vehicle transmission will weigh around the same.

Naturally, transmissions for trucks, semis and other large equipment will weigh much more.

You will typically come across two types of transmission, manual or stick shift as is called in some countries and automatic. There is also an automated manual or dual clutch which lies somewhere in the middle.

Replacing an automatic transmission will usually be more expensive than a manual one.

~ Fun Fact ~
The average cost for a new transmission is around $4,000 – $8,000, depending on the make and model.
